Governor Chet Culver and Lt. Governor Patty Judge today issued the following statement in honor of tomorrow's Veterans Day observance.

In addition, tomorrow, Governor Culver will participate in a Veterans Day Ceremony in Dubuque. The event information is below.

STATEMENT FROM GOVERNOR CULVER AND LT. GOVERNOR JUDGE:

"Veterans Day is a time for us to honor the brave men and women who have dedicated themselves to serving our state and country. We salute those who have worn the uniform and we extend our heartfelt thanks for their legacy of freedom here in America and abroad.

"Today we pause to remember that freedom comes at a great cost. Veterans Day was first observed in 1919 to honor those Americans who served, and in some cases died for, their country. Eighty years after that first celebration, we still pause on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, to honor the sacrifices of those who came before us, those who are with us, and those who will come after us.

"As we reflect on those who have served in the past, let us honor the courageous men and women who are serving their country today, especially those in Iraq and Afghanistan. They are our inspiration and they embody Iowa's commitment to service. All Iowans join these families in praying for their safe return. To those who have lost loved ones in service to our nation, we keep you in our thoughts and prayers. To the veterans living among us, and to their families who have also sacrificed much, we deeply thank you for the gifts you have given all Americans.

"The Culver/Judge Administration is dedicated to supporting our veterans by making historic investments to the Iowa Veterans Home, expanding the Veterans Trust Fund, and providing more funding for the Veterans Homebuyers Program. We will continue to work with citizens, veterans' advocacy groups, and the Legislature to make sure their needs are met and their service is honored.

"So, on this Veterans Day, we ask that all Iowans keep our soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines, and their families, in our thoughts and prayers, and to keep the memory of those who fought and sacrificed for freedom in our hearts."
